Gwennie Fraser

Please note that I am only available to offer Peer Practice Mentoring, MBSR and MBCL supervision.

I have been teaching MBSR courses for the general public, workshops for local businesses and organisations, follow-up courses and retreats in northeast England and Northumberland since 2007. I have also been teaching one-to-one Distance Learning programmes and supervising mindfulness-based teachers and trainees through the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice (CMRP), Bangor University since 2010, and now as an Associate of the Mindfulness Network.

I have a background in medical anthropology and have always been interested in the vital connection between mind and body, and its implications for well-being. My PhD thesis explored the ritual healing practices of indigenous people in the Bolivian Andes.

Personal Practice

I first became interested in meditation during a visit to the Himalayan region of Ladakh, and I was struck by the resilience, kindness and optimistic outlook of the local Buddhist communities, and how practice was completely integrated in everyday life. I have practised meditation in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition for eighteen years, studying principally with Mingyur Rinpoche and Tsoknyi Rinpoche. The benefits of practice in my own life inspired me to train in teaching mindfulness-based approaches at the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice, so that I could share the benefits of practice with others in all kinds of life circumstances.

I feel the journey of mindfulness practice and teaching weaves together all my life interests and experience, and inspires me to keep opening to life’s challenges and limitless possibilities. I have a daily sitting meditation practice, morning and evening, and I do regular days of self-organised retreats at home. I also enjoy mindful movement and walking. Living in the heart of Northumberland National Park and being surrounded by nature has a huge influence on my practice and I love writing creatively about this, as well as keeping bees and working in my garden. I also deeply enjoy the creative process of sharing the journey of practice with others and exploring the roots of practice further through training and retreat.
