Christina Surawy

I am the training lead for the Oxford Mindfulness Centre (OMC) and Co-Director of the Master of Studies in MBCT at the University of Oxford (since 2012). I have been employed by the OMC since 2008 and prior to that I worked as a clinical psychologist and cognitive therapist with a special interest in physical health.


Qualifications

  • I trained with the first generation of mindfulness teachers from 2002 to the present and the first Training retreat I attended was with John Teasdale, Zindel Segal and Mark Williams in 2002. Since then I have worked extensively with Mark Williams and Melanie Fennell in a training role.

  • MSc in Clinial Psychology (1989), Leicester University
  • PhD in clinical Psychology (1985), Cambridge University

Teaching-Training Specialisms

  • MBCT for recurrent depression and MBCT for health anxiety
  • I have also worked with people suffering from long-term physical conditions and trained others within the IAPT service of the NHS.
  • MBCT for the general public

Supervision Experience

  • Supervision of postgraduate students since 2008, whilst tutoring on the Masters programme
  • Supervision of clinical MBCT therapists within an IAPT NHS service
  • External MBCT supervision through the OMC
  • Contributed to a paper by Alison Evans outlining a framework for mindfulness-based supervision
  • Co-facilitated supervision training with Melanie Fennell and Antonia Sumbundu in 2015.
  • Facilitated a peer supervision group at the OMC (supervision of trainers)
  • I attended the supervision workshop run by the Mindfulness Network and led by Alison Evans and Cindy Cooper in 2016

1 hour individual session – £50-£60

½ hour individual session – £25-£35

Personal Practice

I have had a daily practice since 2002. I make use of all the practices which are core to the MBCT/MBSR curriculum, as well as using teachings from personal retreats as a guide to particular intentions I might choose. I have had support from a regular mentor for several years.


Research Activities and Interests

  • Health anxiety (main therapist on Lupina Funded trial between 2008 and 2011)
  • Currently involved in piloting an adapted version of MBCT for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Previously worked on research projects with David Clark (CBT for panic disorder) and Ann Hackmann (Imagery in social anxiety)
